If you have a pet that is not on the CITIES list, its non-commercial import must be carried out according to the following conditions:

  • The animal must be identified or described (passport and chip).
  • The animal must be vaccinated and treated in accordance with measures to prevent the spread of diseases and infections, including species-specific ones.
  • The animal must be accompanied by a health certificate issued by the relevant veterinary authority of the country of departure.

The rules for transporting reptiles (including turtles) vary depending on the season:

In warm weather

It is better to use thick cardboard boxes or non-hermetic plastic containers with ventilation holes. The container must be securely closed. Put bedding in it – a rug, a dry towel, napkins, hay, sawdust or special moss.

In cold weather

When the temperature drops below +15 °C, additional heat is needed. In addition to dry bedding, you can put a heating pad and cloth in the container.

Is it safe to feed reptiles and amphibians before or during travel?

It is not recommended to feed reptiles during transportation: they can go without food for about three days. However, it is important to provide access to water – it is better to have a drinking bowl with you.

How to transport snakes

Transporting snakes in the cabin or baggage compartment of an aircraft is generally prohibited by airline regulations, with rare exceptions.

Snakes must be transported in compliance with strict safety rules: in closed containers, on which information about the type and number of animals is indicated. The container must have a strong lock and good ventilation.
