Pets can only arrive in Mauritius as checked baggage/as cargo. Pets are not allowed in the cabin of an aircraft. Upon arrival in Mauritius, the pet will be subject to mandatory quarantine for 5 to 30 days, depending on the country of departure.
Document requirements
1. Microchip:
All pets (dogs, cats, ferrets) must be identified by a microchip implanted under the skin.
2. Rabies vaccination:
A valid rabies vaccination is required, given at least at 12 weeks of age and 21 days after vaccination.
3. Pet passport:
A pet passport with vaccination and microchip stamps must be provided.
4. Rabies serology test:
For animals from countries on the “red list for rabies” a serology test must be provided, confirming the presence of sufficient antibodies to rabies.
5. Pet Import Permit to Mauritius
Download the application form for import permits. Fill out the application for import permit and send it to this email: moa-dvs@govmu.org
Please note that Mauritius is a very bureaucratic country. All issues are resolved very slowly, documents are often lost. Therefore, after sending your application for import permit, do not forget to remind that you are waiting for a response.

Age Restrictions
The minimum age for animals to enter Austria is 6 months.
The following dog breeds are prohibited from being imported or kept in Mauritius:
- American Pit Bull Terrier
- American Staffordshire Terrier
- Dogo Argentino
- Boerboel
- Staffordshire Terrier
- Tosa Inu
- Fila Brasileiro

The following dog breeds are permitted to be imported into Mauritius only if they are purebred:
- Alaskan Malamute
- Doberman
- Kangal
- Cane Corso
- Neapolitan Mastiff
- Presa Canario
- Rhodesian Ridgeback
- Rottweiler

For those who are going to Mauritius for a long time: all dog owners are required to register their pets with the Mauritius Society for Animal Welfare (MSAW) within 30 days (owners of dangerous breeds within 15 days) and pay a registration fee. The fine for owning a dog without registration is 100,000 rupees or imprisonment for up to 3 years.
