Let’s clear up the biggest myth first: Japan Airlines does not allow pets in the cabin on international flights. Whether you have a tiny kitten or a lap-sized dog, they must travel as Checked Baggage (in the climate-controlled cargo hold) or via JAL Cargo.
Note: The only exception is for certified Service Dogs assisting passengers with disabilities.
The “Who’s Invited” List
JAL is quite inclusive with the species they carry, but they are very particular about age and health.
- Eligible Pets: Dogs, cats, small birds, rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, marmots, chipmunks, and chinchillas.
- The “Too Young” Rule: Puppies and kittens must be at least 16 weeks (4 months) old.
- The “Mom” Rule: Pregnant females are strictly prohibited for their own safety.
The Cost of the Journey
Traveling with JAL isn’t just about the flight; it’s about the care.
- Cargo Hold Fee: Approximately $400 USD per crate for international routes.
- Domestic Flights: JAL offers a separate pricing structure for flights within Japan (usually around 6,000 JPY).
🛑 The “No-Fly” List: Snub-Nosed Breeds
JAL has a year-round ban on specific breeds due to respiratory risks at high altitudes. If your pup has a flat face, they cannot fly with JAL—period.
- Strictly Prohibited: Bulldogs and French Bulldogs are banned on all flights, all year.
- Summer Suspension: For international flights, JAL expands this list to 23 short-nosed breeds (including Pugs, Boxers, Shih Tzus, and Boston Terriers) during the hot summer months to prevent heatstroke.
Approved Carrier Sizes & Specs
JAL doesn’t just want your pet to be safe; they want them comfortable.
- Size Guide: The crate must be large enough for your pet to stand up, turn around, and lie down naturally.
- Material: Must be rigid (plastic, metal, or wood). Soft carriers are prohibited for cargo travel.
- The “Nozzle” Rule: You must attach a nozzle-type water dispenser to the crate. JAL staff will not open the crate to provide water, so this is your pet’s only hydration source!
The “Paws-port” Paperwork
Japan is a Rabies-free country, which means the paperwork is legendary. You should start this process at least 6 months before your flight.
- Advance Notification: You must notify the Japanese Animal Quarantine Service (AQS) at least 40 days before arrival.
- Microchipping: Must be ISO-compliant and implanted before the first rabies shot.
- Vaccinations: Two rabies shots are required, followed by a Rabies Titer (Antibody) Test.
- Consent Form: You must submit a signed “Letter of Consent” to JAL at check-in, acknowledging the risks of air travel.
- Health Certificate: Issued by a government vet within 10 days of departure.
💡 Expert Tips for 2026:
- Rear of the Cabin: If you are traveling on a flight where pets are in the hold, JAL usually seats the owners in the rear of the aircraft to be closer to the bulk cargo area where the pets are kept.
- Export Inspection: JAL recommends applying for your export inspection and ordering your pet’s space at least two weeks in advance.
- The “Scent” Trick: JAL allows you to place a t-shirt or towel that smells like you inside the crate to help calm your pet during the dark flight.
