Belavia is a rare gem for owners of “unusual” small pets. As long as your friend is small, clean, and has their paperwork in order, they can skip the cargo hold and sit right at your feet.
In the Cabin (PETC): Rodents Welcome!
Belavia is famous among pet parents for its flexible cabin policy. Unlike most carriers that only allow cats and dogs, Belavia accepts “small warm-blooded animals.”
- Who’s Invited? Dogs, cats, and—uniquely—rodents (hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats) and household birds.
- The Weight Limit: Your pet + their carrier must weigh no more than 8 kg (17.5 lbs).
- The Seat Rule: Only one pet container is allowed per passenger.
- The Cost: A flat fee of $60 USD / €50 for cabin transport.
- Family Travel: You can transport two small animals in one cage if they are the same species and their combined weight is under 8 kg.
Approved Carrier Sizes (Cabin)
- Maximum Dimensions: 55 x 40 x 20 cm.
- The “Squish” Factor: Soft-sided carriers are recommended as they must fit completely under the seat in front of you. The bottom must be waterproof and lined with absorbent material.
In the Hold (AVIH): For the Bigger Buddies
If your dog or cat has outgrown the 8 kg limit, they’ll travel in the climate-controlled hold.
- Weight & Rates:
- 8 kg to 32 kg: ~$180 USD.
- 32 kg to 70 kg: ~$220 USD.
- Cargo Only: If the total weight exceeds 70 kg, your pet must be shipped via Belavia Cargo.
- Crate Rule: Must be a rigid, IATA-approved kennel with a metal door and secure locking system.
The “Paws-port” Paperwork
Belavia requires you to be a “pro-active” pet parent. You cannot book a pet spot online; you must call them or email support@belavia.by at least 48 hours before departure.
The Essentials Checklist:
- Veterinary Passport: Must show a microchip and valid Rabies vaccination.
- Health Certificate: Required for international travel, typically issued within 10 days of your flight.
- The “21-Day” Rule: For rabies-risk countries, the vaccination must be at least 21 days old but not expired.
- Age Check: Belavia does not accept pets under 3 months old. They need to be old enough to have their first rabies shot!
🛑 Crucial Restrictions
- No Business Class: In-cabin pets are only allowed in the Economy Class cabin. If you’re flying Business, your pet will have to head to the hold.
- No Imports to the UK/Ireland: Due to local laws, you cannot fly pets into the UK or Ireland via Belavia; they must go via a specialized cargo carrier.
- Temperature Embargoes: Belavia reserves the right to restrict hold travel if temperatures at the departure or arrival airport are dangerously high or low.
💡 Expert Tips for Belavia Travelers
Notification is Key: Belavia limits the number of pets per flight (usually 3–5 depending on the aircraft). If you don’t call 48 hours in advance, your pet might be left at the gate!
Early Arrival: Arrive at the airport at least 3 hours early. Pet check-in with Belavia involves a manual document check and weighing the carrier.
Absorbent Pads are Life: Rodents and small dogs can get nervous. Line the bottom of the carrier with extra-thick absorbent pads to keep them dry and comfortable.
