Planning a trip to India with your furry friend in 2026? Air India (the “Maharajah” of the skies) has recently revamped its pet policy under the “Paws on Board” program. While they love pets, their rules for importing animals into India are famously strict—think of it as a “Visa process” for your dog!
Air India is one of the most accommodating carriers in Asia, even allowing brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds in the cabin when other airlines say no. However, you can’t just show up at the gate with a leash; preparation is key.
1. In the Cabin: Flying “Palace” Style
If your pet is small and loves a window view, they might qualify for cabin travel.
- Who’s Invited? Small domesticated dogs and cats.
- The Weight Limit: In 2026, Air India has officially standardized the cabin weight limit to 10 kg (22 lbs), including the carrier. (Note: Some older sources say 7 kg, but the 10 kg “Paws on Board” update is the current 2026 gold standard).
- Carrier Size: Only soft-sided carriers are allowed, with dimensions not exceeding 43 x 25 x 22 cm (17 x 10 x 9 inches). It must fit under the seat in front of you.
- The Cost:
- Domestic (within India): Approx. ₹7,500.
- International: Ranges from $140 to $300 USD depending on flight duration.
- Seating: Pets are typically assigned to the last rows of the Economy cabin (aisle seats). Sorry, no Business Class naps for Fluffy!
2. In the Hold (Checked Baggage)
For the bigger “Princes” and “Princesses” of the pet world, the cargo hold is the way to go.
- Weight Limit: Combined weight of pet and IATA-approved hard crate must be between 10 kg and 32 kg (70 lbs).
- Wait, my dog is huge! If the total weight exceeds 32 kg, your pet must travel via Air India Cargo on a separate Air Waybill.
- The Cost: * Domestic: Approx. ₹16,000.
- International: Between $400 and $800 USD.
3. The “Paws-port” Paperwork (The Hard Part)
India’s Animal Quarantine and Certification Service (AQCS) does not play around. If you are importing or exporting a pet, you need:
- NOC (No Objection Certificate): You must apply for an “Advance NOC” from the AQCS at least 7 days before travel.
- Authorized Gateways: You can only import/export pets through these six designated airports:
- Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Hyderabad.
- The “Matchy-Matchy” Rule: Your pet must enter through the exact airport listed on your NOC. If your permit says Delhi, you cannot land in Mumbai.
- Health Certificate: A vet-signed certificate issued within 72 hours of departure is required.
🛑 4. Crucial Restrictions & “No-Fly” Zones
- Short-Nosed Breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, Persians): These cuties are strictly prohibited from the cargo hold due to respiratory risks. They are welcome in the cabin if they meet the 10 kg limit!
- Route Bans: Air India generally does not allow pets in the cabin on ultra-long-haul flights to the USA, Canada, UK, or Australia (except for Service Dogs).
- Emotional Support Animals (ESAN): As of 2026, Air India does not recognize Emotional Support Animals. Only professionally trained Service Dogs (SVAN) are permitted for free in the cabin.
- Age Limit: Pets must be at least 8 weeks old for cabin travel and 3 months old for the hold.
💡 Expert Tips for 2026:
- The “48-Hour” Rule: You must book your pet’s spot at least 48 hours in advance by calling Air India’s reservation center. Space is limited to just 2 pets per flight!
- Check-In Early: Arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before departure. The paperwork check is a marathon, not a sprint.
- Absorbent Mats: Line the carrier with high-quality absorbent pads. Air India requires the pet to remain in the carrier for the entire flight—no mid-air walks!
