Birds are banned from being imported into Egypt.
First, you need to find out if your bird is on the list of protected animals and birds endangered by extinction – CITES. To find out, enter the name of its species in Latin in the Checklist of CITES Species.
ARE INCLUDED in the CITES lists: the grey parrot, all species of macaws, the black cockatoo, the kakapo (owl parrot) and other species of parrots can be moved between countries only with special CITES permits.
You also need to have purchase documents confirming that the bird was legally purchased from an official nursery. If you do not have such documents, then your bird will not be able to be transported to another country.
If your bird is on the CITES lists, then you need to study the conditions of this document.
ARE NOT INCLUDED in the CITES lists: the budgerigar, the domestic canary, the cockatiel, the ring-necked parakeet (also known as the ring-necked parakeet) and the rose-cheeked lovebird.
If your bird is not listed on the CITES list, then this information is for you
- International veterinary passport
- Chipping or ringing. Your pet must have an identifier. Birds can be identified either by a chip according to the ISO 11784/11785 standard or by a ring on the paw with a number. Identification must be carried out by a veterinarian.
In case of ringing, the number on the ring is entered into the passport. The ring must not be removed. - Vaccinations. To transport birds to the EU without quarantine, they must be vaccinated against avian influenza H5/H7. According to EU Regulation 2021/1933, to import birds into the EU, vaccination against avian influenza must be carried out in two stages (primary and booster) in the time interval from 6 months to 60 days before the trip.
- If the country of export is unfavorable for the country of import for bird flu, then a quarantine of at least 14 days is required, during which, after the 7th quarantine day, it is necessary to take an analysis for the antigen/genome of bird flu H5/H7.
- Check the rules of the country of import for birds before traveling, quarantine in different countries may vary in time.
Transportation of birds
Bird carrier
As a carrier for the airplane cabin, you can use:
- A special fabric one for birds (with a perch)
- A small cage that can fit under the front seat on the plane.
- A plastic box (the same as for cats and dogs)
You should put paper or an absorbent diaper in the carrier, and put a spare paper or diaper in your hand luggage.
A hard plastic box that meets IATA standards is suitable for the luggage compartment.
You need to hang a feeder and a waterer on the door grate. It is advisable to put a special cover on the carrier itself to darken the bird’s habitat.
A “Live Animal” sticker must be attached to the carrier itself.
Food and water on the way
There should always be water and food in the carrier. If it is a fabric carrier, then in standard plastic bowls. If it is a cage, a plastic box with a lattice door or a special carrier, then a vertical drinker can be installed there.
At the airport
When passing through security checkpoints at the entrance to the airport and at pre-flight control, in order not to take the bird out of the carrier during the check, you can ask the security staff to check the cage with a gas analyzer.
